A liberal education prepares students to live with significance, direction and purpose. What one does and how one earns a living is an important dimension of human endeavor, but what one is and how one lives extends far beyond the work or profession which an individual pursues. All humans need to relate to family, neighbors and community. All need to vote intelligently, shop wisely, recreate deeply, and worship sincerely. And for most people, sound parenting and creative family life become highly absorbing focal interests of daily activity.

For all these dimensions of life, including the many additional dimensions of a work career, the finest preparation is a liberal education which blends intense study of a special field (the major) with a general education that informs all the intellectual, emotional and religious actions and aspirations of the human person.

Briar Cliff students receive this type of liberal education throughout a sequence of term courses and one-hour courses required for a degree. Briar Cliff University confers the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Social Work, and Associate of Arts. Bachelor's degrees require the completion of at least 120 semester credits including: 36 term courses and 12 one-hour courses. The two Associate of Arts degree programs, Theology and Liberal Arts, require the completion of 60 semester credits, including 18 term courses and at least six different mini-courses.
